SB1123-73603r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73603 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Taler, 1734-IAB. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS AU-53. An argent gray example warmed by thin layers of champagne and a hint of magenta. Well-struck with even, light wear. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." George II issued four different thalers in 1734, the others being two leaping stallion thalers (Dav-2086 and Dav-2087) and a St. Andrew thaler for the mines (Dav-2089). This fairly scarce wild man thaler, struck 1730-44, has the British arms on the obverse without the lion supporters used on Dav-2090. The very similar Dav-2092A, struck 1743, 1746-50 and 1755, has a more ornate shield.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2092; KM-233; Welter-2559.
