Hamburg 1860 ducat Fr-1142
This specimen was lot 1923 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €650 (about US$905 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HAMBURG, STADT, Dukat 1860. GOLD. Min. gewellt, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Hamburg, ducat of 1860. Slightly bent, minor scratches, extremely fine.)"
By the mid nineteenth century, the gold ducat was a quaint relic of its former dominance as a world trade coin, but several localities, including Hungary, the Netherlands and the city of Hamburg still struck them. This type was issued in small numbers 1854-67. Hamburg ceased minting ducats in 1872.
Recorded mintage: 14,257.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.979 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.
