This specimen was lot 2229 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,918 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY | Hamburg, Stadt, Dukat 1826. NGC MS64." This type was struck 1811 and 1815-34. Hamburg did not give up minting ducats until 1872 amid the coinage reform resulting from unification. Hamburg's prosperity was badly damaged by the looting conducted while the port was under Napoleonic occupation. It did not recover until German industrialization greatly expanded trade.
