SB0123-25128r.jpg

This specimen was lot 25128 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hamburg. Ducat, 1818. Hamburg Mint. NGC MS-62. A fairly SCARCE issue, this nearly-Choice specimen glistens with a high level of shimmering luster and presents a mostly golden-yellow hue throughout, with the coloring lessening slightly at the peripheries. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1811 and 1815-34. Hamburg did not give up minting ducats until 1872 amid the coinage reform resulting from unification. Hamburg's prosperity was badly damaged by the looting conducted while the port was under Napoleonic occupation. It did not recover until German industrialization greatly expanded trade.

Recorded mintage: 7,000.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.979 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-1141; KM-540.
