Sincona Auction 103, lot 271

This specimen was lot 271 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,524 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Hamburg, Stadt. Dukat 1832, Hamburg. NGC MS62. Das neben einem weiteren durch NGC zweithöchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, city of Hamburg, ducat of 1832, Hamburg mint. Tied with one other for finest certified by NGC.)"

This type was struck 1811, 1815-34 in small numbers. Hamburg did not give up minting ducats until 1872, amid the coinage reform resulting from unification. Hamburg's prosperity was badly damaged by the looting conducted while the port was under Napoleonic occupation. It did not recover until German industrialization greatly expanded trade.

Recorded mintage: 9,500.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.979 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Gaedechens III, 228. Divo/S. 77. KM 540, Fr-1141.
