Hamburg 1622 thaler Dav-5365
This specimen was lot 301 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$371 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND, Hamburg, Stadt, Taler 1622. Titel Ferdinand II. Stadtwappen. Rv. Gekrönter Doppeladler, auf der Brust den Reichsapfel mit der Wertzahl 32. Gutes sehr schön." (City of Hamburg, thaler of 1622, issued in the name of Ferdinand II. Obverse: city walls, reverse: crowned double-headed eagle with "32" on its breast. Good very fine.)
This type was struck 1620-37 followed by a very similar type struck in the name of Ferdinand II, 1637-53. It is technically a 32 schilling piece but is universally classed as a thaler. The city of Hamburg issued coins almost continuously until the end of World War One and the mint there is still in operation, striking coins for the Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
