Haiti An 14 25 centimes
This type was struck one year only for the Western Republic of Haiti, which was one of the autonomous fragments of Haiti after securing independence from France in 1804. The coin is dated L'An 14 (year 14, or 1817 AD), following the example presented by the French Revolution for dating coins from the year of independence. The second specimen was lot 1527 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $356.03. The catalog description[1] noted, "Haiti, 25 centimes, AN 14 (1817), Petion (small head), encapsulated NGC MS 63. Muted luster, with faint golden toning, slightly grainy texture, matches photo for KM-15.2 but without P below bust." Note the variation in busts between the two specimens.
