Haiti An 14-P 25 centimes
This specimen was lot 45024 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "HAITI. 25 Centimes, AN 14 (1817)-P. NGC MS-63. This richly toned and attractive example offers bold well-defined design features displaying lovely old cabinet patina with hints of white brilliance highlighting the devices. A nicely preserved survivor that appears to have been plucked from circulation early on and given great care adding to its eye appeal and desirability. Ex: Whittier Collection." This type was struck one year only for the Western Republic of Haiti, which was one of the autonomous fragments of Haiti after securing independence from France in 1804. The coin is dated L'An 14 (year 14, or 1817 AD), following the example presented by the French Revolution for dating coins from the year of independence. Each die was cut by hand and there is considerable variation. This variety with the "P" is scarce.
