The first specimen was lot 815 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"HAINAUT, Comté, Guillaume IV de Bavière (1404-1417), AR gros botdrager (gros à la mante), Valenciennes. D/ Lion assis à g., t. de f., portant au col un manteau aux armes écartelées de Bavière et Hainaut. R/ Croix coupant la légende intérieure: MONE-TA VA-LENC-ENIS. Au centre, le monogramme de Hainaut dans un quadrilobe. Très rare. Très Beau. (county of Hainaut, William IV of Bavaria, 1404-17, silver gros, Valenciennes mint. Obverse: Lion to left, holding in his mouth a shield with the arms of Bavaria and Hainaut; reverse: short armed cross, legend around, with the monogram of Hainaut in the center. Very rare, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 818 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,908 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HAINAUT, Comté, Guillaume IV de Bavière (1404-1417), AR gros. D/ + DVXx WILLEMx COMx HANONIE Monogramme de Hainaut dans un quadrilobe cantonné de trèfles. R/ + MONETAx NOVAx DEx HANONIE Croix fleuronnée cantonnée de quatre groupes de trois globules. Extrêmement rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (county of Hainaut, William IV of Bavaria, 1404-17, silver gros. Obverse: monogram of Hainaut in a quadrilobe, with trilobes in the fields; reverse: floriate cross divides pellets. Extremely rare, Very fine to extremely fine.)"

The third specimen was lot 540 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,

"BELGIEN Hainaut, Grafschaft, Albert de Bavière, Guillaume IV. de Bavière, 1404-1417. Gros (Tuin) o. J., Valenciennes. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Schweizerischer Bankverein 43, Zürich, September 1997, Los 722. (Belgium, county of Hainaut, Albert and William IV of Bavaria, 1404-17, undated gros, Valenciennes mint. Very rare in this condition, Extremely fine.)"

The three examples shown here are all very different yet we lack the documentation to separate them properly.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 2,49 g, the second specimen 1,26 g, the third specimen 3.26 g.
