Sincona sale 89, lot 539

This specimen was lot 539 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$1,850 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Hainaut, Grafschaft, Albert de Bavière, 1389-1404. Double gros o. J., Valenciennes. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Kricheldorf 47, Berlin, Juli 2002, Los 404. Exemplar der Auktion Auctiones AG 26, Basel, September 1996, Los 1585. (Belgium, county of Hainaut, Albert of Bavaria, 1389-1404, undated double groat, Valenciennes mint. Very rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine.)"

Albert of Bavaria-Straubing was regent for his insane brother William 1358-89 and count of Holland, Hainaut and Zeeland in his own right 1389-1404. Hainaut became part of the Burgundian inheritance in 1432.
