Sincona sale 89, lot 536

This specimen was lot 536 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$496 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Hainaut, Grafschaft, Marguerite de Constantinople, 1244-1280. 2/3 Gros o. J., Valenciennes. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Hess Divo 264, Zürich, Mai 1995, Los 314. (Belgium, county of Hainaut, Margaret of Constantinople, 1244-80, undated two-thirds groat, Valenciennes mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"

Marguerite de Constantinople (1202-80) was countess of Flanders 1244-78 and countess of Hainaut 1244-53 and 1257-80. She was married bigamously and the sons of her two marriages squabbled over the counties.
