Sincona sale 89, lot 522

This specimen was lot 522 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,511 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Flandern, Grafschaft, Marguerete de Constantinople, 1244-1280. Petit gros o. J., Alost. Selten. Vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. Exemplar der Auktion Spink Taisei 39, Zürich, Oktober 1991, Los 36. (Belgium, county of Flanders, Margaret of Constantinople, 1244-80, undated little gros, Alost mint. Rare, Extremely fine, Attractively toned.)"

Marguerite de Constantinople (1202-80) was countess of Flanders 1244-78 and countess of Hainaut 1244-53 and 1257-80. She was married bigamously and the sons of her two marriages squabbled over the counties.
