Gujarat AH 952 tanka Fr-590
This specimen was lot 2436 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,000 CHF (about US$2,428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA | Sultans of Gujarat. Nasir al-din Mahmud III, 944-961 H. (1537-1553). Tanka 952 H. (1545 AD). NGC MS64." The sultanate of Gujarat was a Muslim state on the west coast of India to the south of Kutch. It was founded by Zafar Khan Muzaffar, who declared himself independent of the Delhi sultanate in 1407. Weakened by Portuguese and Mughal attacks, the sultanate was conquered and the last sultan committed suicide in 1591. Mahmud III reigned but never ruled and was murdered in 1553 at the age of 28. His coins, a tanka and half tanka (Fr-591), are scarce but not rare.
