Gujarat AH 954 tanka Fr-590
This specimen was lot 2437 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA | Sultans of Gujarat. Nasir al-din Mahmud III, 944-961 H. (1537-1553). Tanka 954 H. (1546/1547 AD). NGC MS64." The sultanate of Gujarat was a Muslim state on the west coast of India to the south of Kutch. It was founded by Zafar Khan Muzaffar, who declared himself independent of the Delhi sultanate in 1407. Weakened by Portuguese and Mughal attacked, the sultanate was conquered and the last sultan committed suicide in 1591. Mahmud III reigned but never ruled and was murdered in 1553 at the age of 28. His coins, a tanka and half tanka (Fr-591), are scarce but not rare.
