Gujarat AH 948 tanka Fr-590
This specimen was lot 639 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUJARAT: Mahmud III, 1537-1553, AV tanka, NM, AH948, date in the lower obverse margin, choice XF-AU. From the accession of Mahmud III in 1537, the Gujarat gold tanka weight was about 12.00g until the end of the dynasty." The sultanate of Gujarat was a Muslim state on the west coast of India to the south of Kutch. It was founded by Zafar Khan Muzaffar, who declared himself independent of the Delhi sultanate in 1407. Weakened by Portuguese and Mughal attacks, the sultanate was conquered and the last sultan committed suicide in 1591.
