This type was struck for Guatemala by the Philadelphia mint. The design caused considerable controversy as it appeared to endorse Guatemala's claim to British Honduras, a claim strongly resisted by the residents thereof. The type was struck the one year only, after which the quetzal obverse was resumed in 1946 (KM 243.2).
Recorded mintage: 900,000 (most were actually struck in 1944).
Specification: 8.33 g, 0.720 fine silver, 27 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 253.
