Guatemala 1892 1/4 real
This specimen was lot 1112 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $595. The catalog description[1] noted, "Guatemala, 1/4 real, 1892, very rare, NGC AU 50. Low luster and contrast but only light wear, parts of rims crude (as made), a key date that always commands a premium. NGC #4770572-031." Guatemala was the last country in Latin America to abandon the real, in 1912, a reflection of the extreme conservatism of the peasant society. The specimen shown is of a common type struck 1892-94. It is almost completely anepigraphic, lacking a mintmark or country of origin and bearing only a date. This is a rare date despite the large mintage.
