This specimen was lot 35397 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it sold for $305.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Peso 1889-MG VF. A scarce date of this type with a mintage of 6,794 pieces. Lightly cleaned, yet with strong details present for the grade. From The Santa Maria Collection." This peso with the head of liberty was struck in Guatemala in 1882 and 1889. The 1889 is very rare. The design is an interesting deviation from the familiar slouched Justice type struck 1872-79 and 1894-97. It loosely resembles the liberty head used on the gold five pesos of 1872-78 (KM 198).
Recorded mintage: 6,794.
Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 208.
