Guatemala 1783-NG P 2 reales
This specimen was lot 75387 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $89. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 2 Reales, 1783-NG P. Nueva Guatemala Mint. Charles III. PCGS VG-10. From the Richard August Collection." An earthquake closed the mint in Antigua Guatemala in 1772 and 1776 is the year the new mint opened in Nueva Guatemala. Harris[2] notes that Guatemala bust two reales of Charles III are rare, with one eleventh as many reported as Lima and one eighteenth as many as reported for Mexico City. This type is listed for 1779-85. In 1786, the fineness was secretly lowered from 903 thousandth to 896 thousandths. Cayón lists a 1783-NG M two reales, which we don't believe exists, as no coinage with initial M is known prior to 1785.
