Unlike the other colonial mints, Guatemalan portrait eight reales of Charles III are rare compared to pillar eight reales of the same mint[1] and the specimen shown is unusually nice. Guatemala issues are notably cruder than other mints. In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Assayer "P" is noted for the years 1759-83. This specimen was lot 1029 in Ponterio sale 158 (New York, January 2011), where it sold for $3,737.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1780-P. VERY FINE."
