Guatemala 1765 2 reales rev DSLR.jpg

Shown is a 1765 two reales from the Guatemala mint, of a type issued 1760-1771. Gilboy[1] notes this date as 'R3' or very rare, with 11 to 25 pieces extant. Krause[2] notes the rarity of this date and does not list prices for lack of records. The piece is well worn, weighing in at somewhat under the acceptable minimum for an uncirculated strike.

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine silver, 0.1995 oz ASW; this specimen 6.17 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11481, G-2-13, KM 25.
