Guatemala 1755 8 reales rev cs DSLR.jpg
close up of counter stamp

This specimen is a Guatemala eight reales cob, originally minted in the 1750's and counterstamped in 1838-41 to authorize its continued circulation. The type I and type II countermarks were applied to one side only; the type III and type IV were applied to both sides. The type I shows the sun at left behind a single volcano; the type II (shown here) shows the sun rising over three volcanoes. It seems to be the most common countermark and was applied to a variety of Bolivian, Peruvian, Mexican, Guatemalan cob two, four and eight reales. Most survivors are holed.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver (see original host coin).

Catalog reference: KM 102.
