Groningen-Ommelanden 1682 ducaton Dav-4927
This specimen was lot 91 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €5,250 (about US$7,398 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Dukaton of zilveren rijder, GRONINGEN Provincie 1581 - 1795, 1682, Silver Ruiter naar rechts CONCORDIA. RES. PARVAE. - CRESCVNT .:. Kz. gekroond provinciewapen met schildhouders, jaartal onder het wapen in cartouche. Omschrift ❀ MO: NO: - ARG: - ORD: GRON: - ET. O - MLAN .:. De oplage bedraagt slechts 570 exemplaren. RR Donkere patina, zeldzaam in deze staat. Prachtig. (ducaton of 1682, province of Groningen. Obverse: mounting knight charges right; reverse: crowned provincial arms, date below in cartouche. Very rare, only 570 struck, dark patina, seldom seen in this quality, extremely fine.)"
This rare type was struck 1682-83 (Numista states the 1683 is not confirmed). A few presentation strikes are known in gold (KM 40a) as well as piedforts. Other silver coins included two, six, seven, ten, fourteen, twenty-eight and thirty stuiver pieces. Groningen, in the far northeast of the United Provinces, was too poor to support a substantial coinage like Holland or Utrecht.
