The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these periods often feature a crown as part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is an copper-nickel fifty lepta. The obverse features the portrait of King Constantine II (living in exile in Italy) and was issued during the dictatorship, which collapsed in 1973.
