Greece 1973 10 drachmai rev DSLR.jpg

The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these periods often feature a crown as part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is a copper-nickel ten drachmai and was the first issue of that denomination by the new republic. The pegasus is borrowed from ancient Corinthian silver coins.

Recorded mintage: 22,599,848 plus 541,000 issued by the dictatorship (KM 101).

Specification: 7.5 g, copper-nickel, 26 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 110.
