The modern nation of Greece obtained independence from Ottoman Turkey in 1833. It functioned as a monarchy from that year until 1925 and again from 1935-1974. Coins from these periods often feature a crown as part of the design. Today the country is the Hellenic Republic of Greece. The coin shown is a nickel brass two drachmai and was the first issue of that denomination by the new republic. The owl is borrowed from ancient Athenian silver coins.
Recorded mintage: 51,163,812 plus 7,972,000 issued by the dictatorship (KM 99).
