Ponterio sale 168, lot 40592

This specimen was lot 40592 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $646. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREECE. 5 Drachmai, 1833. NGC AU-53." This two-year type was struck in Paris 1833 and 1844 for king Otto I (1832-62). It comes with and without the "A" mintmark. Greece, poor, backward, corrupt and riven by feuds, could ill afford a substantial silver coinage and this is the only issue that is at all available. Proofs are reported to exist.

Recorded mintage: 378,000 (all varieties).

Specification: 22.5 g, 0.900 fine silver, .651 troy oz AGW, 37 mm diameter.
