Sincona sale 38, lot 1370

This specimen was lot 1370 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 22,000 CHF (about US$26,385 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Georg II. 1935-1947 100 Drachmen 1935. Birmingham. Äusserst selten, nur 140 Exemplare gefertigt. Polierte Platte. FDC. NGC PF 63 Cameo. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. (kingdom of Greece, George II, 1935-47, one hundred drachmai of 1935, Birmingham mint, very rare, only 140 struck, Choice Proof, Magnificent condition.)"

Struck about 1940 to commemorate the restoration of the monarchy, the outbreak of World War Two and the subsequent Nazi occupation of Greece prevented its circulation. Gold twenty and silver 100 drachmai were also issued.
