CNG Lissner sale, lot 481

This specimen was lot 481 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $4,235. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREECE, Kingdom. Georgios II. Second reign, 1935-1947. Proof AR 100 Drachmai. Commemorating the Restoration of the Monarchy. Birmingham mint. Struck 1940, though dated 25 November 1935. In NGC encapsulation graded PF 65. Gem toned proof with faint iridescence. Mintage of 500 pieces. Purchased from Sylvia Haffner, November 1969." Struck about 1940 to commemorate the restoration of the monarchy, the outbreak of World War Two and the subsequent Nazi occupation of Greece prevented its circulation. Gold twenty and 100 drachmai were also issued.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 38 mm diameter; this specimen 36 mm diameter, 25.02 g, 12h axis.
