This specimen was lot 71323 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1978. Llantrisant Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC MS-65. Verging upon a prooflike status, this Gem offers a glistening surface quality that wholly enchants and transfixes." This type was struck 1974-84 in substantial numbers (the peak mintage was 9,100,000 in 1979) but as it was sold at its gold value, it is unlikely any ever circulated as coin. Cleaned and damaged specimens are likely ex-jewelry.
Recorded mintage: 6,550,000.
Specification: 7.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.2355 troy oz AGW.
Catalog reference: S-SC1; Fr-418; KM 919.
