This decimal penny, or 1/100 of a pound, was introduced as a denomination in 1971. It was struck in this style until 1982, when the word "new" was dropped from the reverse. It was converted to copper-plated steel in 1998. This specimen was lot 34182 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Elizabeth II Mint Error - Wrong Planchet New Penny 1978 MS64 PCGS. Struck on 2.8 g copper nickel planchet."
Recorded mintage: 292,770,000 plus 86,100 proofs.
Specification: 3.56 g, bronze, 20.32 mm diameter.
