This five new pence, or 1/20 of a pound, was introduced in 1968 as part of the Great Britain decimal reform. It was equal to the shilling in the sterling coinage. This design was used until 1982, when the word "new" was dropped. The weight was reduced to 3.25 g in 1990.

Recorded mintage: 120,270,000.

Specification: 5.65 g, copper-nickel, 23.6 mm diameter.
