This fifty new pence, or half of a pound, was introduced in 1968 as part of the decimal reform. The gold half sovereign had not circulated for many decades; this coin replaced the ten shilling note. This design was used until 1982, when the word "new" was dropped. None were struck for circulation in 1971-75. The weight was reduced to 8 g in 1997.
Recorded mintage: 188,400, 000.
