Great Britain 1936 shilling
This specimen was part of lot 32257 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), which sold for $24,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Extremely Rare Proof of Record Set. George V 6-Piece Certified silver Proof Set 1936 NGC, 1) 3 Pence - PR66; 2) 6 Pence - PR65+; 3) Shilling - PR66; 4) Florin - PR64, KM 834; 5) 1/2 Crown - PR66, KM 835; 6) Crown - PR65, KM 836; An extremely rare Proof of Record set for George V's final year of coinage, the King having died in January 1936. Only a handful of examples were struck of each denomination, all of which seldom appear at auction and reliably generate strong bidding when they do. This group stands head and shoulders above the norm in terms of technical quality, mostly gems or above exhibiting matching argent-gray color, fields with considerable flash and a subtle steel-blue tinge, devices razor-sharp and clearly produced to an exceptional standard." This type was struck 1927-36 in substantial quantities and this date is common. The silver shilling was last struck for circulation in 1946.
Recorded mintage: 11,911,000 + proofs.
Specification: 5.65 g, 0.500 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.
