Great Britain 1896 3 pence
This specimen was part of lot 70832 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, February 2020), which for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Maundy Set (4 Pieces), 1896. London Mint. Victoria. All PCGS Gold Shield Certified. 1) 4 Pence. PCGS PROOFLIKE-66 Gold Shield. 2) 3 Pence. PCGS PROOFLIKE-67 Gold Shield. 3) 2 Pence. PCGS PROOFLIKE-65 Gold Shield. S-3946. 4) Pence. PCGS PROOFLIKE-66 Gold Shield. S-3947. An attractively toned Gem set." This type was struck for the Maundy sets 1893-1901. The threepence was also struck for circulation, the only coin in the Maundy set to do so.
