The first specimen was lot 50149 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $748. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1871. PCGS MS-62. Die number 16. Ex: Douro Cargo." This specimen was lot 30406 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[2] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Sovereign, 1871. NGC MS-64. Shield type with die number 28. While readily available in lower grades, at this lofty condition they become much more difficult to locate. Frosty unimpaired fields complement the other equally nice features of the coin." This bust was used on the sovereign, or one pound coin, 1838-64 with a slightly modified type (KM 736.2) extending until 1874. This date is common. All issues of this date with the shield reverse bear die numbers.

Recorded mintage: 8,767,000 for 1871-72.
