Jean Elsen sale 136, lot 1510

This specimen was lot 1510 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €300 (about US$440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GRANDE-BRETAGNE, Georges IV (1820-1830), AV demi-souverain, 1824. Très Beau. (kingdom of Great Britain, George IV, 1820-30, gold half sovereign of 1824. Very fine.)"

This type is listed for 1823-25 and is very scarce as is the superseding bare head type of 1826-28 (KM 700). Half sovereigns would not be minted in large numbers until the 1840's.

Recorded mintage: 592,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold.
