Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 44608

This specimen was lot 44608 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Crown, 1820. London Mint. George III. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. An attractive example of the type with razor sharp strike detail, faintly prooflike fields, and patchy gray to charcoal toning. From the Sundial Valley Farms Collection." This half crown, the first struck on the mint's new steam powered equipment, was issued 1817-20. George III was by then under the regency of the prince of Wales and would die during the year. Half crowns of George IV also exist for 1820 and are more common.
