This specimen was lot 1316 in a recent Spink sale. This type was struck 1774-86 and is the first really common type. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.
