This specimen was lot 37113 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 6 Pence, 1739. London Mint. George II. NGC MS-63. Variety with roses in angles." This type is listed in various varieties for 1728-41, including KM 564.1 (plain) struck 1728; KM 564.2 (plumes) struck 1728; KM 564.3 (roses and plumes) struck 1728-36; KM 564.4 (roses, shown here) struck 1739, 1741). The mint did not produce near enough small change for the industrial boom of the eighteenth century, leading to a proliferation of private tokens. The situation would not be rectified until the reform of 1817.
