This specimen was lot 72336 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, 1686. London Mint. James II. PCGS EF-45. G over A in "MAG". An impressive example, this wholesome piece yields a rich strike and strong details, with some handsome toning ringing the peripheries. A piece deserved of much attention and appeal." This type was struck 1685-88 during James's short reign. Later shillings of William III are much more common.
