Great Britain 1684 2 guineas Fr-284
This specimen was lot 30963 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles II gold 2 Guineas 1684 VF - Cleaned. Evidently an ex-jewelery piece, showing cleaned surfaces and mount marks; produced in 1684, the last year of Charles II's coinage before his death, this was perhaps worn as a mourning piece for the popular King who followed the dour Cromwell as ruler of England. Examination of the legends show hints of this coin's original luster, and generally a good coverage of detail all around; some scratches on the reverse should, however, be noted. Overall a presentable specimen, and an interesting piece of British 17th century history. From the Collection of A Scottish Gentleman." This type was struck 1675-84. There is a similar type (KM 443.2) struck during the same years with an elephant and castle added below the king's bust; this marked gold obtained from Africa.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 16.7 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.492 troy oz AGW.
