Great Britain 1649 unite Fr-269
This specimen was lot 33201 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Commonwealth gold Unite 1649 MS62 NGC, Sun mm. A sublime representative of this first year of the Commonwealth Unite series, and further, the sole example certified in Mint State condition across PCGS and NGC. The offering's "top pop" status may easily be surmised in hand; the surfaces retain an inspiring degree of sun-gold luster that glistens across the faces, with sharp legends and fully preserved die polish lines to the reverse confirming a complete lack of circulation wear, allowing for the fullest expression of character and appeal. Soft accents of reddish tone heighten the visual allure of this indisputable conditional rarity, the first of this date that we have seen in over 15 years! From the Long Island Collection." In 1649, king Charles was tried and executed, putting an end to the English Civil War but political wrangling continued, much to Cromwell's dismay. This type was struck 1649-57.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 9 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen is 9.02 g.
