Great Britain 1650 crown Fr-271
This specimen was lot 33199 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $16,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Commonwealth gold Crown 1650 MS62+ NGC, Sun mm. Exceedingly close to choice preservation, with sharp, scintillating brilliance emitted throughout the surfaces underneath a delicate honey-gold patina. Strikingly attractive owing to its naturally cabinet-toned appearance, the example's lofty designation for the type should leave little doubt in collector's minds as to the desirability of the piece. One of only three examples seen by NGC to date, and imminently collectible in this laudable certified condition. From the Long Island Collection." In 1649, king Charles was tried and executed, putting an end to the English Civil War but political wrangling continued, much to Cromwell's dismay. This type was struck 1649-57.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen is 2.30 g.
