Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 52127
SB124-52127 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 52127 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1624). London Mint: mm: Trefoil. James I. PCGS EF-40. Delivering impressive detail, this handsome Crown offers sharp details and much alluring eye appeal throughout. Limitedly handled and appealing, examples such as this Crown are increasingly difficult to find, and constantly demanded. From the Lucius S. Ruder Collection." Silver crowns of five shillings were struck only sporadically during the reign of James I; the primitive equipment in the Tower Mint struggled to cope with such large coins. Charles I had some struck as well but they don't become common until the reign of Charles II, when screw presses were installed in the mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 30.10 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 64, Dav-3760A, S-2665; N-2121.
