This specimen was lot 33579 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,740. The lot description[1] noted, "Great Britain: James I Crown ND (1623-1624) VF35 NGC. Mint Mark: Lis. The coveted Crown emission from James I, presented here with an incredible cabinet patina that emits appealing mauve tones and champagne accents reminiscent of residual luster. From the Abbeygate Collection." Silver crowns of five shillings were struck only sporadically during the reign of James I; the primitive equipment in the Tower Mint struggled to cope with such large coins. They are rare and popular, causing them to be expensive. They come with (KM 64) or without plumes over the shield on the reverse (KM 63, shown here).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 30.10 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 29.58 g.

Catalog reference: KM 63, Dav-3760, S-2664, N-2120.
