Great Britain (1610-11) shilling
This specimen was lot 31191 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1610-11). London Mint; mm: bell. James I. PCGS EF-40. Second coinage, fifth bust. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust right; XII (mark of value) to left; Reverse: Square-topped coat-of-arms. Some striking weakness and moderate handling is noted, along with a few scattered--very subtle--marks, but an otherwise charming representation of the type. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." The SCWC lists seven different shillings for James I; as they are undated, sorted them out requires skill, with the SCWC having deleted many photos. This one is perhaps the most common. With the accession of James I we drop "England" as the country name and adopt the current "Great Britain."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.02 g, 0.925 fine silver.
