Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1187
Goslar in 1648, in Wolfenbuttel near Hildesheim

This specimen was lot 1187 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €160 (about US$217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, GOSLAR, Ville, AR 16 Gute Groschen (2/3 Taler), 1674. D/ Aigle éployée, t. à g. R/ Valeur et date dans le champ. Légère faiblesse de frappe. Très Beau. (Germany, city of Goslar, silver sixteen gute groschen of 1674. Obverse: eagle displayed, head to left; reverse: value and date. Slightly weakly struck, Very Fine.)"

This obscure type was struck 1674-75 and is pretty scarce. Sixteen gute groschen was a gulden or two-thirds of a thaler. Goslar was an imperial city surrounded by Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and often acted as a mint for the dukes of that state. The city minted an extensive series of minor coinage in the seventeenth century but no thalers are listed in the SCWC.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 19,07 g.
