Goslar in 1648, in Wolfenbuttel near Hildesheim

This specimen was lot 3908 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,701 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GOSLAR, STADT. Reichstaler (24 Groschen) 1628 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1623 geändert), mit Titel Ferdinands II. RR Felder geglättet, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Goslar, thaler of 1628/3, in the name of Ferdinand II. Rare, fields smoothed, very fine.)"

Goslar was an imperial city surrounded by Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and often acted as a mint for the dukes of that state. The city minted an extensive series of minor coinage in the seventeenth century. Thalers, including this one, are well attested but are listed in the SCWC as half thalers.
