Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 42179
SB0123-42179r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42179 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Portuguese India. Goa. Bazaruco, ND (1598-1621). Philip II. NGC AU-58." The Portuguese were the first European power to make direct contact with India. They concentrated on trade but were not above piracy or political meddling if the opportunity arose. They conquered or dominated a good part of India in the sixteenth century but gradually had to yield to others, especially the British. By the eighteenth century, Portuguese holdings were limited to Diu, Damao and Goa. Each had a mint which struck hammered coinage until the 1860's. This denomination was also struck in copper (KM 50) and with an astrolabe on the reverse (KM 51). Philip II is better known to history as Philip III of Spain, which ruled Portugal 1580-1640.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: tin, 2.1 g.

Catalog reference: KM-52; Gomes-05.01.
